Pedro Porro joined us on loan from Sporting CP in January 2023, with an obligation to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
A dynamic and versatile player down the right flank, Pedro made a remarkable impact during his first full season with us in 2023/24. He seamlessly adapted to Ange Postecoglou’s system, often transitioning from right-back to midfield. His offensive contributions were evident as he scored three well-taken goals and provided seven assists in 35 Premier League starts.
In the FA Cup, Pedro truly shone with a stunning, dipping strike from 30 yards out that found the net against Burnley in the third round in January 2024, earning him the Official Supporters’ Clubs’ Goal of the Season award.
Overall, Pedro participated in 37 of our 41 matches during the 2023/24 season, including 35 in the Premier League and two in the FA Cup, bringing his total appearances for the club to 54. He celebrated his 50th appearance in the Premier League with a goal in our 3-0 victory over Sheffield United on the final day of the campaign, which secured us a fifth-place finish.
His impressive performances also earned him a recall to the Spain national squad for the March 2024 internationals, where he earned his third cap against Colombia, although he was ultimately not selected for Euro 2024.
Born in Don Benito, Spain, Pedro began his youth career at Gimnástico Don Benito before moving to Rayo Vallecano in 2015 and then to Girona in August 2017, where he made his senior debut a few months later. After a brief loan spell at CF Peralada, he returned to Girona, making a total of 35 appearances and scoring once.
After facing us twice in the UEFA Champions League group stage that season, Pedro signed with Manchester City in August 2019 but quickly returned to Spain to gain first-team experience with a loan to Real Valladolid.
An attacking full-back, Pedro joined Sporting CP on a two-year loan in August 2020, a deal that was made permanent in July 2022. During his first season in Lisbon, he played a crucial role in securing a domestic double, helping Sporting win the Primeira Liga for the first time in 19 years and the Portuguese League Cup (Taça da Liga), scoring the winning goal in the final. He continued to excel in the following season, contributing to another Taça da Liga victory for Sporting.
While at Sporting, Pedro made a total of 98 appearances across all competitions, netting 12 goals. His exceptional performances in the 2020/21 season earned him the Primeira Liga’s Defender of the Month award three consecutive times (from November 2020 to January 2021) and again in September 2021. He led the league in assists and was named to the Team of the Year for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
In the latter half of the 2022/23 season, Pedro showcased his versatility by playing as a right wing-back, right-back, and right midfielder, making 17 appearances (13 starts) and scoring three goals in the Premier League against Southampton, Manchester United, and in the final match against Leeds.
On the international stage, Pedro made seven appearances for Spain’s Under-21 side before earning his senior debut in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Georgia in March 2021. He was also part of the Spain squad that finished as runners-up in the 2021 UEFA Nations League. By the end of the 2023/24 season, he had accumulated three caps for the national team.
