Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham were riding high after thrashing Manchester United the previous weekend, but Jamie Carragher brought them back down to earth with a cheeky reminder following their disappointing loss to Brighton.
Carragher took to Twitter to remind Postecoglou that “seven days is a long time in football,” as Spurs suffered a reality check on the south coast. Just a week earlier, Tottenham had dismantled a struggling Manchester United side 3-0 at Old Trafford, with praise flooding in for their dominant display.
However, things unraveled quickly against Brighton. Spurs stormed into a 2-0 lead, with Brennan Johnson netting his sixth goal in as many games, only for their advantage to vanish after the break. Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh sparked a three-goal comeback within 20 minutes, with Danny Welbeck heading home unmarked to seal a 3-2 victory for the Seagulls.
Carragher’s tweet echoed sentiments from his previous column where he had warned: “Ange’s Tottenham are great to watch, but they’re also great to play against! If that doesn’t change, the manager eventually will.”
Tottenham’s defeat leaves them ninth in the Premier League, with three wins and three losses so far. Postecoglou expressed his frustration, labeling it “probably the worst defeat since I’ve been here.”
Reflecting on the loss, Postecoglou said: “I’m absolutely gutted. The second half was unacceptable – we were nowhere near where we should be. Maybe we got carried away. We kind of accepted our fate, which is hard to understand because we’ve not done that before. We usually fight for everything, and when you don’t, you pay the price.”
He added: “Maybe things were going too smoothly. Football and life will trip you up if you get too far ahead of yourself. This was as bad as it gets, and it’s my responsibility to fix it. We lost all our duels, weren’t competitive, and when that happens, no tactics can save you.”
Tottenham now have a brief respite during the international break before they return to action with a London derby against West Ham.
