Matheus Nunes will not face any legal action from Spanish authorities after reports of his alleged arrest in Madrid during the last international break were overstated.
The Manchester City midfielder, who was not called up for Portugal’s national squad last month, took some personal time while City had no matches. On Wednesday, rumors surfaced that Nunes had been involved in an altercation at a Madrid nightclub, reportedly leading to his arrest and subsequent questioning by police.
However, sources at MEN Sport confirm that Nunes was never arrested, and police did not take any action when they responded to the situation.
The original report from El Mundo, later shared by the Daily Mail, claimed that Nunes took a man’s phone in the nightclub’s restroom after the individual attempted to take a photo of him. According to the report, Nunes allegedly refused to return the phone, prompting police intervention, with the midfielder supposedly being handcuffed and released a few hours later.
While El Mundo suggested that Nunes might face charges and a potential trial, it’s understood that the situation was exaggerated. Nunes merely pushed the phone away after requesting the individual to stop taking pictures of him.
Though police were called to the scene, they did not arrest Nunes, and he will not face any further consequences.
Nunes made his second start of the season on Tuesday in Bratislava, where Manchester City defeated Slovan 4-0 in the Champions League. This performance followed his goal-scoring appearance in the Carabao Cup against Watford, as the Portuguese international continues to solidify his place in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
