Cristian Romero joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta in August 2021.
Appointed vice-captain and a key leader in defense, “Cuti” had an impressive 2023/24 season. He made an immediate impact in the season opener against Brentford, scoring the first goal of the Ange Postecoglou era in a 2-2 draw. Over the campaign, he netted five Premier League goals, including a stunning strike against Burnley and a powerful header against Crystal Palace.
In October 2023, Cristian was shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award, and by the end of the season, he had made 34 appearances, 33 of them in the Premier League, bringing his total to 98 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions.
On the international stage, Cuti is among the elite group of World Cup winners. He became only the second Spurs player, alongside Hugo Lloris, to win the World Cup while at the club when Argentina defeated France in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final in Qatar, December 2022.
Cristian arrived at Tottenham after being named Serie A’s ‘Best Defender’ for the 2020/21 season, where his solid performances helped Atalanta secure a third-place finish for the third consecutive year. That same summer, he was part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America in July 2021, playing three matches, including the final against Brazil, where Argentina kept a clean sheet to win their first major trophy in 27 years.
Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Cristian began his professional career with Belgrano in the Argentine Primera Division, debuting in 2016. He moved to Serie A side Genoa in 2018 and then to Juventus in 2019. However, Juventus loaned him back to Genoa for the 2019/20 season.
Cristian spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Atalanta, a move that was later made permanent. He made 42 appearances for the Bergamo-based club that season, including seven in the Champions League, helping them to a third-place Serie A finish and the Coppa Italia final.
His debut season at Tottenham, 2021/22, began with some challenges, including a hamstring injury sustained on international duty in November, which kept him out until February. Once he returned, he became a vital part of Antonio Conte’s defense, forming a back three with Eric Dier and Ben Davies. This trio helped Spurs win eight of 13 Premier League matches, conceding just eight goals and securing a fourth-place finish to return to the UEFA Champions League. Cristian featured in 30 matches in all competitions, including 22 in the Premier League.
The 2022/23 season was somewhat disrupted due to injuries and the World Cup. He missed five matches before heading to Qatar but still made 34 appearances across Tottenham’s 50 matches, including 26 Premier League starts. This brought his total appearances for the club to 64.
Cristian made his senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Chile on June 3, 2021. He scored in just 130 seconds of his second appearance against Colombia five days later. Having won the Copa America in 2021, he reached the pinnacle of football by lifting the World Cup in 2022. Ahead of the 2024 Copa America, Cristian had earned 30 caps for Argentina.
