Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario joined Tottenham Hotspur from Empoli in the summer of 2023.
What a debut season he had! The Italy international played every minute of Tottenham’s 38 Premier League matches in 2023/24, helping the team secure a fifth-place finish. He also featured in both FA Cup ties, bringing his total appearances to 40 in 41 matches across the season.
Known for his bravery and composure with the ball at his feet, Guglielmo often initiated attacks as Spurs built from the back. His remarkable shot-stopping abilities, especially his quick reflexes on close-range saves, were pivotal in Tottenham’s strong start to the campaign, where they won eight and drew two of their first 10 matches.
Despite being nominated for the Premier League Save of the Month award in five consecutive months, and again in February, Guglielmo didn’t win the accolade. However, his consistent performances were recognized as he was named ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ at the London Football Awards in March 2024.
His displays at Spurs also earned him his first senior Italy cap in March 2024, where he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 friendly victory over Ecuador in New Jersey, USA. He earned a second cap in June 2024 against Turkey and was part of Italy’s squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.
Born in Udine, Italy, Guglielmo started his youth career at Bearzi before joining Udinese’s academy in August 2013. He spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Fontanafredda, making 30 appearances.
A commanding presence in goal with excellent distribution, Guglielmo moved to Venezia in August 2015, where he made 89 appearances in all competitions, keeping 28 clean sheets. During the 2016/17 season, he played a key role in Venezia’s promotion to Serie B and their Coppa Italia Lega Pro triumph.
After four years at Venezia, Guglielmo joined Cagliari in July 2019 and spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Perugia, where he made 39 appearances. He returned to Cagliari and made his Serie A debut in April 2021. After seven appearances for the club, he moved to Empoli on loan in July 2021, with the transfer becoming permanent the following year.
Guglielmo’s impressive two-year spell at Empoli, where he made 71 appearances in all competitions, earned him his first call-up to the Italian national team in September 2022, as part of Italy’s UEFA Nations League campaign, where they finished third.
By 2024, his outstanding performances at Spurs solidified his position as one of Italy’s top goalkeepers, earning him two caps for the national team and a place in Italy’s squad for Euro 2024.
