Timo Werner joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024.
The dynamic forward, known for his ability to play across the front line, made an immediate impact on his debut at Old Trafford, providing an assist for Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser at the start of the second half. Over the course of his loan, Timo made 14 appearances for us, including 13 in the Premier League, where he started 10 matches and scored in consecutive victories against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. He also recorded three assists before his season was cut short due to a hamstring injury sustained against Arsenal in April 2024.
In May, we announced that Timo would return on loan from RB Leipzig for the 2024/25 season, with an option for a permanent transfer.
The Germany international began his career at TSV Steinhaldenfeld before moving to VfB Stuttgart’s youth setup, where he progressed to make his senior debut in August 2013 in a Europa League qualifying match, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history.
During his tenure at VfB Stuttgart, Timo made 103 senior appearances, scoring 14 goals, and he remains the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer after netting his first professional goal in a Bundesliga match in September 2013.
A versatile attacker, Timo joined RB Leipzig ahead of the 2016/17 season, marking the club’s inaugural year in Germany’s top flight. He had a remarkable debut campaign, scoring 21 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions, helping Leipzig secure a second-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Timo finished as Leipzig’s top league goalscorer for four consecutive seasons, and in November 2019, he made Bundesliga history by recording a hat-trick of goals and assists during an 8-0 win against Mainz.
In the prolific 2019/20 season, he netted 34 goals in 45 matches, earning accolades for his outstanding performance, including the Bundesliga Player of the Month awards for November and December 2019, as well as a spot on the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
In July 2020, Timo signed with Chelsea, making his Premier League debut in September against Brighton & Hove Albion and scoring his first goal for the Blues that same month. Over his time at Stamford Bridge, he made 89 appearances and scored 23 goals, contributing to the club’s triumphs in the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup in August 2021, and the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2022.
He returned to RB Leipzig in August 2022, where he helped the club claim the 2022/23 German Cup (DFB-Pokal) and the German Super Cup (DFL-Supercup) in August 2023. To date, Timo has made 213 appearances for the Bundesliga side across both spells, scoring 113 goals.
On the international stage, Timo has represented Germany at various youth levels and earned his first senior call-up in March 2017, debuting the same month. He played a crucial role in Germany’s Confederations Cup victory that year, assisting the winning goal in the final and finishing as a joint top goalscorer. Timo has also competed in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and UEFA Euro 2020. By the end of the 2023/24 season, he had earned 57 caps for Germany, scoring 24 goals.
